Team Anna ends fast, takes political plunge

Throwing light on its proposed 'political alternative', Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal said that it would not be a party but an 'andolan' or movement.

NEW DELHI: Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal has confirmed that they will form a political party to stem out corruption plaguing the nation.

Anna Hazare, while speaking at the end of the fast at Jantar Mantar on Friday, announced that he himself would not be contesting elections, but will support this party 'from the outside'.
Hazare, who ended his fast by sipping coconut water offered by former army chief Gen. V.K. Singh, however, made it clear that he will not be contesting elections, but will support his team members.

Anna Hazare said that he will tour the entire country in support of anti-corruption movement being launched by his team and this could take shape of a political alternative if people give their support.

"I will keep going on tours, go to people for an alternative. If people are awakened, we will think of an (political) alternative," he said.

"If Jan Lokpal bill comes, I do not say 100 percent but 65 percent corruption will vanish," Hazare said as the crowd applauded the 75-year-old crusader.

Throwing light on its proposed "political alternative", Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal said that it would not be a party but an "andolan" or movement.

"Our aim is not to grab power, but to end the Delhi-centric government and take governance to the villages and the people. Ours will not be a party, but a movement," Kejriwal told the thousands gathered at the indefinite fast site in Jantar Mantar.

"There will be no party high command and the people will select the candidates. We will go among the farmers and the people and ask them about their problems. They will tell us about their problems and their solutions. We will also go among the youth and ask them about their problems and ask for solutions. Likewise, we will go around the entire country and meet people. They will form the ghoshna patra (manifesto)."

"Our aim is not just to win the polls, it is to challenge all the political parties. All the donations we get we will put on our website and challenge the political parties to do likewise. We will likewise put our expenses on the website."

He added that they would take their agitation "inside parliament and on the streets".

"I have a vision that in three years, India will change," he added.

Meanwhile, Team Anna's decision to end their fast at Jantar Mantar and proposed to form a 'political alternative' as an answer to an unresponsive government evoked some mixed responses.

Taking potshots at Team Anna over its decision, Swami Agnivesh said they have hurt the sentiments of the general public by leaving their 'anshan' midway.

"They ran away...I am pained that Anna Hazare, Arvind Kejriwal and others have broken the sanctity of 'Anshan' (fast) as a method of protest. Anshan is always the last option," Agnivesh said.

"Calling off the fast and looking at an alternative political option has hurt the dignity of the fast that was introduced by Mahatma Gandhi. They should apologise to the country to have used the sentiments of the country," he added.

Bharatiya Janata Party chief Nitin Gadkari today stressed that Team Anna could not become an alternative to the BJP and also said his party did not face any threat from the new group.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni Thursday said their move to form a political alternative would make them realise the responsibilities and compulsions of being in politics.

"I have come to know through TV (that they will seek people's opinion for political alternative). They will realise what are compulsions, what are responsibilities. Particularly working with honesty is not easy," Soni said.

She said only Team Anna knows what was the purpose of its fast being held at Jantar Mantar.

"I am glad they agreed to call off fast...they can't hold government to ransom. Government has some obligations," Soni said.

Ambika Soni said that a few of the members in the government always felt that Anna team were inching towards active politics.

"We always said that Anna Hazareji's people, who were supporting him, were always inspired by politics. This was indicated by many of the stances they took and a large number of incidents. We realized that they swere working on a political agenda when they spoke about Members of Parliament, criticizing all of them and others holding constitutional posts" said Soni.
