Aegis ex CEO to start data analytics company

Aparup Sengupta, former chief executive officer at Aegis BPO owned by the Essar group, is starting a company that specialises in data analytics, an emerging information technology area of much interest to corporations.

Sengupta, along with Anil Modi, a former colleague who was the chief marketing officer at Aegis, have set up Ananto Analytics, which will analyse data to offer insights that will help arrive at business decisions. At the Essar Group, he helped grow the BPO business from a few million dollars to close to $1 billion (Rs 5,400 crore) and was in the middle of extended efforts to take the company public when he left the firm unexpectedly.
The venture, set up with an initial investment of $5 million (Rs 27 crore) from the two founders, will have offices in Mumbai, New York and San Francisco. Sengupta will be the executive chairman while Modi will be chief executive officer.

"After managing customer experience for several years, I realised that it alone is not enough -- customer insight is also needed," Sengupta said. "Three years ago, I would have been worried about this venture being ahead of its time. But that's no longer the case."

About 90% of the information available is estimated to have been created in the last two years. By 2015, the data analytics services delivered from India are expected to earn over $1 billion, according to a recent study by Avendus Advisors. Ananto has already got its first two customers - a US bank and a telecom provider based out of Asia — and Sengupta believes talent availability will give India an edge in this segment.

In India, where Sengupta sees a huge potential in insurance segment, Ananto is talking to ten prospective customers. Ananto intends to raise funds from investors after six months. Bangalore-based Mu Sigma, which specialises in data analytics have gotten premium valuation by financial investors as there are only a few companies in India that with proven expertise in this emerging area. Sengupta, in 1999 co-founded a BPO firm 24/7, based out of Bangalore.
