Which hospitals are best for pediatric care? U.S. News’s latest Best Children’s Hospitals rankings identify 80 hospitals with demonstrated expertise in kids’ medicine. Twelve of those hospitals earned a spot on the Honor Roll with high marks in at least three clinical specialties. Here they are, in reverse-rank order.
10 (tie): St. Louis Children's Hospital-Washington University
St. Louis Children’s Hospital is affiliated with Washington University School of Medicine. The 250-bed facility says it sees about 275,000 patients a year. This year, it ranks among the nation’s top 10 hospitals in three specialties: Neurology & Neurosurgery (#7), Orthopedics (#8), and Pulmonology (#9).
10 (tie): Johns Hopkins Children's Center
This Baltimore hospital admits about 150 kids each day and may see more now that its new facility, the Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Center, is up and running. Johns Hopkins Children’s Center is one of the top five hospitals in Neurology & Neurosurgery. It’s in the top 10 in two other specialties: Diabetes & Endocrinology (#8) and Neonatology (#10).
10 (tie): Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC
Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, like most on this list, is no stranger to the Honor Roll. Its nine floors house close to 300 beds. What makes this hospital stand out? Superb care in three specialties: Diabetes & Endocrinology (#6), Gastroenterology (#6), and Neonatology (#8).
8 (tie):Children's Hospital Colorado
While its main campus operates just outside Denver in Aurora, services are available at 15 locations across the state, says the hospital. Children’s Hospital Colorado is affiliated with the University of Colorado, and earned impressive marks in three specialties: Diabetes & Endocrinology (#4), Pulmonology (#6), and Cancer (#8).
8 (tie):Nationwide Children's Hospital
There’s something new about this hospital located in Columbus, Ohio—and it’s not the paint. Nationwide broke onto the 2012-13 Honor Roll due to excellent performance in three specialties: Gastroenterology (#5), Cardiology & Heart Surgery (#7), and Pulmology (#8).
7: Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago
As the rankings were wrapping up, the venerable Children’s Memorial Hospital was days away from opening a new facility under this name. This hospital has been around for more than a century. Making the Honor Roll this year gives it even more to be proud of. It had four high-ranking specialties: Urology (#6), Nephrology (#7), Gastroenterology (#8), and Cancer (#9).
6: Seattle Children's Hospital
This 250-bed Seattle pediatric center’s high ranking in four specialties landed it at six on the Honor Roll this year. It was third in the nation in Nephrology, the treatment of kidney disorders. Here are its other top mentions: Urology (#5), Cancer (#7), Neurology & Neurosurgery (#8).

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is again on the Honor Roll. It has 286 beds, treats close to 100,000 patients a year, and has six top 10 rankings: Cancer (#5), Orthopedics (#6), Diabetes & Endocrinology (#7), Gastroenterology (#7), Neonatology (#7), and Cardiology & Heart Surgery (#8).
4: Texas Children's Hospital
Texas Children’s Hospital is huge, a 469-bed, Houston-based facility. It’s affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine and far outperforms most hospitals in eight specialties: Neonatology (#2), Cardiology & Heart Surgery (#3), Gastroenterology (#3), Pulmonology (#3), Cancer (#4), Nephrology (#5), Neurology & Neurosurgery (#5), and Urology (#7).
3: Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center
Ohio has two hospitals on the Honor Roll. This hospital held on to its #3 spot from last year. Like several other hospitals on the list, it’s expanding, with construction of a research facility set to begin in June 2012.
