Every CIO is struggling for answers to BYOD

Pat Gelsinger was Intel's first CTO, and many thought he would succeed Paul Otellini when he retired as Intel CEO. But in 2009, after 30 years at the chip maker, Gelsinger moved to EMC as president and COO, and last year moved to EMC company VMware as CEO. On a recent visit to Bangalore , he spoke to TOI about his focus at the cloud and virtualization software company . 

Corporate adoption of public clouds remains limited. Do you see this changing?

True, the large majority of what is running on public clouds like Amazon and Rackspace is not corporate workloads. It's Zynga. It's Netflix. And mobile-only internet-based services. What's happening from the corporation is this small sliver of almost entirely test and development. Inside corporations are these developers who can't get what they want from their IT department. So they use public clouds to get their job done. But if the corporation gets excited about the work and wants to deploy it, they can't do it in their internal datacentres because it's not compatible with, say, the Amazon resources used to develop it. Corporate IT requires SLAs (service level agreements), governance, privacy and other regulatory things that the current public clouds do not provide. This is why we now have our hybrid cloud solution that solves this problem by creating this seamlessness across the public-private environment . We'll have the same network, security, management , and compatible applications . 

NIIT bags Rs 344 cr AII contract

 NIIT Technologies has signed a multi-year Rs 344 crore value contract with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the implementation of Airport Operations Control Centers (AOCC), in partnership with SITA, the global air transport IT and communication specialist. This project will benefit AAI, its customer airlines, and its other stake-holders across 10 cities.

The Airport Management System and Resource Management System will be implemented and integrated by NIIT Technologies solution which has been supplied by SITA. The systems and their interfaces will help improve airport management by consolidating multiple sets of information and providing accurate real-time data from just one source.

Smart pajamas to read bedtime stories to kids

With the new Smart PJ's, the task of reading bedtime stories to your kids could become much simpler and easier.

The $25 Smart PJ's, which are available in pink and blue, have 47 colorful dot patterns that work with an app.

When a camera on a tablet or phone is held over the dots, the app will launch an interactive bedtime story or show other types of educational content, including photos of animals or objects.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg s pay package rose 16 per cent last year

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg reaped a gain of nearly $2.3 billion last year when he exercised 60 million stock options just before the online social networking leader's initial public offering.

The windfall detailed in regulatory documents filed saddled Zuckerberg, 28, with a massive tax bill. He raised the money to pay it by selling 30.2 million Facebook shares for $38 apiece, or $1.1 billion, in the IPO.

Galaxy S4, Samsung denies component shortages

Samsung Electronics said it is not having any component shortage issues related to flagship smartphone Galaxy S4, which goes on sale this weekend, as supply issues have snarled the US rollout with some major carriers.
