NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday quashed a Central Bureau of Investigation probe against Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati in a massive corruption and disproportionate assets case.
The Apex Court ruled that there is no finding and no material report pertaining to disproportionate assets case against Mayawati.
The CBI should not have lodged a disproportionate assets case against Mayawati as there was no direction regarding it from the highest court of the land, the court said.
The judges, while quashing the case, said: "We are satisfied that we didn't issue any direction to probe alleged disproportionate assets of Mayawati between 1995 and 2003. The CBI proceeded against Mayawati without properly understanding our order."
Anything beyond Taj Corridor scam was not a subject matter for the SC, the Supreme Court said.
In 2004, the CBI had filed a case against Mayawati when she was the Uttar Pradesh chief minister. Despite the courts and the income tax authorities ruling in her favour, the CBI said that it had enough proof to show that the BSP leader was involved in corruption.
The CBI also said that Mayawati's wealth grew from Rs 1 crore to Rs 50 crore in less than 4 years, and that there was no explanation for such wealth.
